What is a Podiatrist?

Podiatrists are university-educated health professionals who deal with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of specific conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs.

How does a Podiatrist Treat?

As well as treating problems of the feet and lower limbs, your podiatrist can also provide you with professional advice on a number of areas including:

• Diabetes management education.
• General Foot Care and Foot Hygiene advice.
• Children’s feet. What is normal? What is abnormal?
• Footwear education. Including education for athletes, children and the elderly in regards to choosing the right shoe.
• Biomechanical Assessment.
• Education for people with occupations requiring long periods of standing on hard surfaces.

Podiatrists use a range of methods to treat conditions of the feet and lower limbs.

With access to professional instruments and tools, treatment of skin and nail conditions such as corns, calluses and ingrown toenails are relatively painless, non invasive and provide immediate relief.

In cases of severe ingrowing toenails a simple nail surgery under local anaesthetic is sometimes performed.

In some cases mild acids are used to treat skin conditions such as warts. Cryotherapy or freezing of warts is also sometimes used.

Soft tissue injuries and structural problems often respond to a simple rehabilitation program including stretches, rest, massage and tapings.

Sometimes more complex problems are treated with orthotics. Orthotics are devices that realign the feet into their normal position and allow joints and soft tissues to function at their optimum level.

What does a Podiatrist Treat?
